Most Natural Black White Conversion

quick tip logoIn discussing the Inversion / Component Blend Modes it was stated that the Color Mode “…… Creates a result colour with the luminance of the base colour and the hue and saturation of the blend colour. ”

Using this relationship one can create the ‘most natural’ conversion of a coloured image to Black and White by using a 50% grey blend colour. The Process is quite simple:

      1. Load the image.
      2. Layer > New Fill Layer > Color Fill
      3. Set the Color Fill to 50% Gray (R 128, G 128, B 128)
      4. Set Blend Mode to Color and Opacity to 100%

For those using Affinity

      1. Load the image
      2. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Recolor
      3. Set the Saturation slider to zero
      4. Set Blend Mode to Color and Opacity to 100%
